The death of 13-year-old Krystal Bateson continues to perplex doctors and forensic pathologists. The Baldwin girl, who died unexpectedly June 13 while staying in Winfield for a softball tournament, may have been stricken by viral myocarditis, or a cold of the heart, said Dr. Bryan Dennett, Cowley County coroner.

The past week for Jay Rusk's 14-U Phenix fast-pitch softball team has been a series of unexpected events. It began on a somber note with the unexplained death of Krystal Bateson, who was found unresponsive by her mother June 13 in her hotel room while at a tournament in Winfield.

Services for Krystal Lynne Bateson, 13, Eudora, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Baldwin. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Lawrence. Krystal died June 13, 2004, in Winfield of complications from asthma.
