Another November, another championship game -- it's almost routine for the Lawrence Lions and the Derby Panthers. Red and green once again faced off Saturday afternoon in Kansas University's Memorial Stadium.

The Lawrence High School football team heeded its fans' chants of "Four-peat, four-peat," by winning its fourth-straight Class 6A state title and its seventh in nine years with a 23-19 victory over Topeka Washburn Rural High School on Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

On paper Lawrence High was overmatched. On the field it was overrun. In the end, though, the Lions with a little help from the ghosts of those who went before overachieved and overcame top-ranked Garden City, 10-8, in the Class 6A state football championship Saturday at KSU Stadium.

Pundits and coaches alike predicted a high-scoring affair, but Mike Reese knew better. "I knew this game would be won by defense," said Reese, a Lawrence High junior safety, after the Lions nailed Garden City, 9-3, for the Class 6A state football championship Saturday at KSU Stadium.
