McCluskey-Fawcett became senior vice provost, overseeing academic affairs and student services, this summer following a year as interim dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. She previously served as associate provost since 1996. She began her career at KU in 1985 and has served as associate dean of the CLAS, chair of the department of psychology, and associate vice chancellor for academic affairs.

A native of Palco, Steeples came to Lawrence in 1975. He has been a distinguished professor of geology since 1993. Steeples oversees policies on space allocation, faculty start-up packages, research administration, environmental health and safety and support for graduate teaching and research assistants. Steeples holds a Ph.D. in geophysics from Stanford.

Gautt was assistant provost since 1996 before getting her new title of vice provost this summer. She oversees faculty and instructional development and works on faculty policy issues. She began teaching in KU's department of special education beginning in 1990. Before that, she taught at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Goodyear was promoted to her current position after working as associate vice chancellor for Information Services at KU. A native of Independence, Mo., she came to KU in 1996 from Texas A&M University. At A&M, she led the technical implementation of a cooperative program that connected 52 public academic libraries in the state.

Roberts has been associate vice provost since 1999. He was named to the post when Robert Barnhill decided to accept a prestigious yearlong assignment Sept. 1 as the National Science Foundation/Council of Graduate Schools' dean-in-residence in Washington, D.C. A national search to name a permanent vice provost is expected to be completed by July 1, 2004.
Roberts is a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, a national professional association. Roberts joined KU in 1990 as chair and professor of the electrical engineering and computer science department. He previously worked 21 years for TRW Inc., now owned by Northrop Grumman, and ESL Inc. in California and Colorado. He earned his bachelor's degree at KU in 1966, a master's degree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1968 and his doctorate in electrical engineering at Santa Clara University in 1979.

Eakin's career at KU began in 1983, when he served as assistant to the dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. He later worked at the KU School of Medicine campus in Wichita and as director of budget management and fiscal services before becoming associate vice chancellor in 1991.

Long came to KU in 1983 as director of the Kansas and Burge Unions. He added the title associate vice chancellor for student affairs in 1994, before taking his current position in 1999. Before coming to KU, he worked at Emporia State University and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

Roney, a native of Concordia and graduate of Kansas State University, comes to KU after serving three years as vice president of student affairs at the University of Akron. She is looking at ways to restructure her division, formerly called "student affairs," after a study showed areas needed to work more closely together. Among her goals are improving student retention and graduation rates.

Before coming to KU, Johnson was assistant to the vice chancellor for student affairs at the universities of Missouri and Vermont. Johnson was brought in to improve student retention, facilitate student development and enhance diversity. The dean of students is responsible for campus social, cultural and educational life.

Bentley oversees KU's extensive library system, which serves nearly 26,000 students and includes 3.3 million books and 27,000 current serial titles housed in seven library facilities on the Lawrence and Overland Park campuses. Bentley previously was the dean of libraries at Auburn University.

Gaunt was a practicing architect for 32 years before coming to KU as dean of the School of Architecture. He is a former chief executive officer of Ellerbe Becket Inc., Minneapolis, Minn. Gaunt is leading the School of Architecture into a multiyear facilities improvement project that includes raising money for a new building that would be built next to the school's home, Marvin Hall.

Fuerst came to KU from Texas A&M, where he had been since 1979. Fuerst heads a business school that is involved with programs to help regional businesses tackle problems. The school also has a strong international presence and has become a resource for international business education services.

JoAnn Smith, a Kansas City, Kan., native, also holds the title vice provost for university outreach. She has extensive experience in leadership and development of continuing education and has earned many national awards. She came to KU from the University of Kentucky where she worked for 17 years, culminating with a position as associate dean for university extension. KU's Continuing Education program includes services at KU Medical Center, Law Enforcement Training Center in Hutchinson and fire service training in Lawrence, to mention a few.

Angela Lumpkin was dean of education at State University in West Georgia from 1996 to 2000. She was the head women's basketball coach for North Carolina from 1974 to 1977. The School of Education has about 80 faculty members, about 30 professional staff members and about 2,700 students.

Bell was selected earlier this year to replace Carl E. Locke. Bell was professor of mechanical engineering and director of the Center for Advanced Vehicle Technologies at the University of Alabama. He joined the Alabama faculty in 1986 and had been chairman of the Alabama mechanical engineering department since 1995.

Hedden, a native of Colby, started at KU in July. He previously served as dean of the College of Fine Arts at Wichita State University for one year. Prior to that, he had been at the University of Arizona since 1987, serving as College of Fine Arts vice dean since 2000. Hedden earned his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from KU.

Gentry came to KU from the University of Nevada, Reno, where he was dean of its School of Journalism for five years. Before that, he served on the faculty of the University of Missouri at Columbia School of Journalism. He also has experience working for newspapers. The KU School of Journalism is considered one of the top schools in the country.

Before coming to KU's law faculty in 1993, McAllister was a clerk for U.S. Supreme Court Justices Byron White and Clarence Thomas and Judge Richard Posner of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. He also was in private practice in Washington D.C. McAllister also has earned several awards, including the W.T. Kemper Fellowship for Teaching excellence in 1999.

Wilcox was president and chief executive officer of the Kansas Board of Regents when he was named earlier this year as the new dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS). He is a former chair of KU's speech-language-hearing department. The CLAS is the largest of KU's 14 schools with annual budget of nearly $60 million in state-allocated funds and more than $27 million in grants and contract monies.

Ken Audus started his career at KU in 1984 as a post-doctoral fellow and was hired on the faculty two years later. The South Dakota native had been chairman of the department of pharmaceutical chemistry for six years when named dean. His research focuses on the way drugs pass through the placenta and blood-brain barrier.

Atkinson replaces Deborah Powell, who left the School of Medicine in summer 2002. Atkinson had been professor and chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Kansas University Medical Center. Atkinson has edited several books on cytophatholgy, the diagnosis of disease based on cellular analysis. She came to KU in January 2000 from the MCP Hahnemann School of Medicine in Philadelphia.
