Lawrence, Kansas
Hagen, a physician, is the chief administrator for KU Medical Center. He has considerable experience in medicine and health care management before coming to KU, including once holding the position of the Surgeon General of the U.S. Navy.
He also was commanding officer of Bethesda Naval Hospital and the Naval Hospital at Camp Pendleton, Calif. Hagen has streamlined and consolidated separate clinical practice foundations into a unified approach at KUMC.
However, his leadership has been criticized in the last year because of the loss of top doctors and researchers at the Med Center seeking greener pastures.
Michael Welch, vice chancellor for research, left to become president and CEO of the Finch University of Health Sciences/Chicago Medical School.
Bill Hudson, a nationally known kidney researcher, and S.K. Dey, a nationally known reproductive biology researcher, both left for Vanderbilt University. Deborah Powell, executive dean of the School of Medicine, left for a similar position at the University of Minnesota.
The loss of top researchers has led to rumblings about the administration at the Med Center being operated as a "dysfunctional family."
Hagen has his work cut out for him in the next year in trying to attract strong candidates to replace the top researchers who left and improve morale at the Med Center, which underwent staff position cutbacks in 2002 because of losses in state funding.
