- About 60 peace activists marched Saturday down Massachusetts Street in an event that marked six years of anti-war demonstrations. “The country seems to have lost interest in ever bringing peace,” activist C.J. Brune said. “There was a lot of interest six years ago and even five years ago. Now it’s like business as usual.”

- “Junior high school was an awful experience for me,” says Lauren Gaugert, 27, band director at West Junior High School. “I felt awkward and self-conscious, didn’t know who I was and didn’t like myself. - Commissioners heard the request in June, but asked the Traffic Safety Commission to consider whether the new pedestrian refuge islands would be compatible with bicycle riders. The city’s Bicycle Advisory Board unanimously agreed to support the project, and the city’s Traffic Safety Commission also is recommending approval.

- KC-area runners to train in Lawrence

- Legions of cars, minivans and SUVs will be rolling into Lawrence early Saturday morning, and tailgating won’t be the first thing on the drivers’ minds. About 200 members of The Runner’s Edge, a training program for runners in the Kansas City metro area, will be coming to town for a weekly group workout, which offers members an opportunity to run anywhere from two to 25 miles.

- City Hall leaders are making plans to likely become the first city in the state to provide on-site health care for its employees. The goal is to produce healthier employees and a healthier budget. “We feel like this is going to give us the opportunity to reduce our insurance costs or at least reduce the likelihood that our costs will increase greatly,” Lawrence Mayor Mike Dever said.

- Criminal charges haven’t been considered against drivers involved in two fatal accidents this summer in Douglas County because law enforcement agencies haven’t formally submitted the cases to prosecutors for review, Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson said.

Parents of students at Langston Hughes School said they were pleased with how the district communicated with them during the report of a residential burglary near the school. “I was just really impressed with the promptness and everything they were doing to make sure the parents were OK and didn’t flock to the schools to get their kids,” said Kirsten Krug, who has a first-grader at the school.

Instead of the shouts of children, yips and barks filled the air. And towels, of course, were not the preferred way of drying off. It was a day for the dogs at the pool, 727 Ky., where hundreds of dog owners brought their pets to the sixth annual Pooch Plunge.

When the city enacted a smoking ban, Martin could have turned the Mojave Desert into an ocean of tears. He didn’t.

- City commissioners are in the mood for a downtown party, even if it requires closing down parts of New Hampshire Street and making a substantial donation to the party fund. Commissioners on Tuesday agreed to provide $20,000 in funding to help pay for Get Downtown, an event that will attract about a dozen bands to downtown Oct. 3-4.
