Lawrence High Schools: Separate and Unequal?

Over the past few weeks, the Lawrence school board has made plans to improve and upgrade the athletic facilites at both Lawrence High School and Free State High School, in a way to make them more equal. While these changes are much needed and appreciated, today on Room 125, the Lawrence High School student podcast, we'll look at the larger issue of inequity between Lawrence high and Free State, particularly in relation to funding and socioeconomic difference of the student populations and why this issue remains greatly unacknowledged.

Afternoon highs will head back near normal today with a high of 76 degrees under mostly sunny skies. Look for a light west wind for most of the afternoon between 5-10 mph with your overnight low dropping near 50 degrees. In today's news: KU tuition: For the first time, Kansas University tuition and required fees next year could cost at least $7,000 for every student. $10 million grant for young readers: KU on Thursday received a $10 million grant to help children get ready to read before they enter kindergarten. Wilco concert a success: City leaders and the promoter for Wednesdays Wilco concert downtown proved successful and city manager David Corliss said future concerts would be considered. Allen Fieldhouse renovations approved: The $55 million renovations of Allen Fieldhouse and the surrounding facilities are a go, after approval was given at Thursday morning's Kansas Board of Regents meeting.

KU junior guard Mario Chalmers on Wednesday announced his intention to enter the 2008 NBA Draft without an agent, leaving open the possibility for a return to Kansas for his senior season.
