Tumbleweeds, like these that nearly cover a barbed-wire fence near Elkhart in Morton County, are worse this year than most residents can remember. "If you burn them off," says fence owner Sandy Turner, "the wire will break when it freezes the next winter." If left on the fence, their massed weight, aided by winds, will bring down fence posts that are set in concrete.
