Agency: Operation Wildlife
Address: 23375 Guthrie Road, Linwood
Contact number: 542-3625
Operation Wildlife provides rehabilitation and veterinary services to injured and orphaned Kansas wild animals, as well as wildlife education to the community. Volunteers can be trained to help at the receiving center in Shawnee or at the main facility center in southern Leavenworth County with cage cleaning, dietary preparation, physical therapy, administering medications, habitat setup and general housekeeping duties. Volunteers also can provide transportation or become trained in home care. Operation Wildlife also needs volunteers and donations for its annual fund-raising garage sale in August. Visit www.owl-online.org or call the number above to learn more about the organization, volunteer positions or to apply.
Immediate volunteer needs
- Interfaith Caring Neighbors will have two volunteer training sessions in the next month, 6:30 p.m. June 30 and 10 a.m. July 1. Attendance at only one session is required for new volunteers. The sessions last from one to one-and-a-half hours. ICaN volunteers give one to two hours a week to assist an older person living independently by helping to shop for groceries or providing friendly visits. To learn more or to attend the training, call the ICaN office, 749-2005.
- Meals on Wheels needs volunteer drivers and substitutes to keep this essential program running during the summer months, when many regular volunteers travel on vacation. Volunteers deliver noon meals five days a week to elderly, disabled and homebound people. Each route of eight to 10 homes takes 45 minutes to one hour, and volunteers can serve one day per week or more if available. Call Kim Cullis at 979-1440 to sign up.
- The second annual "Crashin' for the Kids" fund-raising demolition derby benefiting the Douglas County Infant Toddler Coordinating Council is scheduled for Sept. 4 at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds. Volunteers are still needed to help with publicity, ticket sales and other needs throughout the summer leading up to the event. Contact Dena Bracciano at 843-3059 for more information.
