Lawrence commuters show little interest in rail line

If the future of a proposed commuter rail line between Topeka and downtown Kansas City depended on its Lawrence riders, the train might never leave the station. A study to gauge the feasibility of such a rail line project is that just 32 passengers would board in Lawrence. That low number is despite a finding that 71 percent of residents surveyed along the Topeka-Kansas City corridor were "very" or "somewhat" supportive of developing commuter rail service, and projections showing that enough people in cities between here and the Kansas City area would hop on to make the idea worth further investigation.

By now, commuters who drive the Kansas Turnpike between Lawrence and Topeka probably have adjusted to changes at the Topeka service area. For example, they no longer pass the service area if they get off the turnpike at the East Topeka interchange, which was moved farther east last August.

It won't be long before transportation officials have a better idea who would ride commuter trains in the Kansas City metropolitan area. A survey the Mid-America Regional Council sent in early December to residents in Lawrence and other communities in the region is one more tool to gauge support for a proposed commuter rail line connecting downtown Kansas City, Mo., with surrounding cities.

Kansas has the fourth-best set of roads in the nation, according to a recent study by the Washington, D.C.-based Road Information Program, which ranked Missouri as having the third worst.
