She thanked Costa Rican authorities for their hard work on the 22-month-old homicide probe, but she said she was nervous that without the key witness's testimony, the case could fall apart next week.

She was a dancer, an animal lover and an idealist with a big smile. Shannon Martin was remembered Friday night with a mixture of joy and sadness, tears and smiles. At least 200 people gathered at Ecumenical Christian Ministries, 1204 Oread, to remember Martin, the 23-year-old Kansas University student who was stabbed to death last weekend in Costa Rica.
KU to review Golfito program

Kansas University will conduct a review of its study-abroad program operation in Golfito, Costa Rica, in light of the slaying of Shannon Martin, Chancellor Robert Hemenway said Thursday. "We'll do a full analysis," Hemenway said, adding that the safety of students is the No. 1 priority for study programs abroad.

The body of Shannon Martin, the Kansas University student murdered while doing research in Golfito, Costa Rica, will return today to Kansas, escorted by a KU official and the slain woman's boyfriend. Susan Gronbeck-Tedesco, interim director of study abroad at KU, and David Schmitz, KU senior and Martin's boyfriend, left Wednesday for Costa Rica and are expected to return sometime today.

Those who live in Golfito, Costa Rica, call it a quiet Pacific coast town where events like the savage murder of Kansas University senior Shannon Martin never happen. "It's not a violent place," said Oscar Quiros, a lifelong resident and director of Kansas University's study-abroad program in Golfito. "Local people walk late at night with no worry," Quiros said. "Everybody's totally shocked and confused. We have no idea why it happened. We can't even imagine."

Services for slain student slated here, Topeka

Services are scheduled in Topeka and Lawrence to honor a Kansas University student murdered in Costa Rica. Family and friends will remember Shannon Martin, 23, at a Friday morning ceremony at Countryside United Methodist Church in Topeka. Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, Topeka, is in charge of arrangements, and burial will be at Highland Cemetery in Ottawa.

The FBI may join Costa Rican officials investigating the brutal weekend slaying of a Kansas University student who traveled to the Central American country last week to complete her research on tropical ferns.
Shannon Martin, 23, was found dead about 3 a.m. Sunday in the small Pacific port town of Golfito. She had been stabbed several times, officials said.
