Soda revenue

To the editor:

At a time when our public schools are in a budget crisis, some members of our Lawrence school board favor dropping contracts with soda vendors, Pepsi and Coca-Cola?

This sounds like another example of a few individuals making decisions that just don't make sense about what is best for the "general good of all." I do not dispute the fact that soda is not a healthy beverage choice, but taking pop out of the schools is not going to keep kids from drinking it.

We can continue to use a curriculum in the schools that educates students why soft drinks can be unhealthy, and they can choose to drink a soda or maybe they will learn to enjoy soda "in moderation!" We can't take away every so-called "bad" thing in our children's lives to protect them. Why not teach them how to make the best choices and decisions for themselves? Bottled water and sports beverages also are provided by these vendors.

If our students can benefit from revenues produced through these vending contracts, we need to keep them. Our schools need this revenue.
