To the editor:

The confrontation between administrators and faculty at Kansas University reported in the article by Erwin Seba, "Substitution spawns class action" (Oct. 20) should be of concern to every member of the faculty profession at KU and in Kansas. Teaching and classroom activities are responsibilities and commitments that each faculty member takes very seriously. The standards of the profession allow for substitutes by expert scholars when a professor is unable to fulfill the commitment due to health reasons.

Because the Kansas Conference of the American Association of University Professors has been involved for over a year listening to several KU faculty members who sought AAUP's assistance on matters of policy, procedure and academic freedom, this latest incident serves to raise serious concerns about the professional standards at KU.
