A Lawrence neighborhood group plans to honor a colorful character from the city's early history this weekend.

The Pinckney Neighborhood Assn. will have a picnic and a ceremony Saturday at Clinton Park to dedicate a sign that commemorates Hugh Cameron, a Civil War veteran.

The festivities begin at 12:30 p.m. Saturday with an old-fashioned picnic at Clinton Park, Fifth and Maine streets.

Those who attend are asked to bring their own picnic basket and blanket. Desserts will be shared.

At 1:30 p.m., the sign dedication will begin with a performance by Ric Averill.

Averill will play the part of Cameron, who lived in the Pinckney neighborhood at the beginning of the last century.

Cameron arrived with a group of early settlers and became known as "the Kansas Hermit."

The gathering will walk with "Cameron" from the park to Indiana Street and will follow him to near the site of his former treehouse at Fifth and Louisiana, where the sign commemorating him will be dedicated.

The dedication is the result of a project funded by a neighborhood grant through the city.
