The Leonard Peltier Defense Committee on Monday announced a restructuring of its governing board to include three new members:
Michael Yellow Bird, associate professor of social work at the University of Arizona;
Glenn Marshall, council president of the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe in Massachusetts;
Matt Hill, Mohawk activist.
The committee also announced that Debra Peebles, a long-time activist on issues involving religious freedom in prisons, has joined the group's office staff. The committee's headquarters are in downtown Lawrence, 932 Mass.
Peltier, 57, is currently serving two life sentences in the U.S. Penitentiary in Leavenworth for his role in the deaths of two FBI agents killed during a 1975 shoot-out on the Pine Ridge Indian reservation in North Dakota. Peltier insists he was wrongly convicted.
