District to minimize potential tax increase

Lawrence schools Superintendent Randy Weseman said Wednesday that it would take a 2-mill increase to maintain existing services for next year. But he has asked staff members to prepare scenarios to tighten budgets that don’t directly affect classroom instruction because school board members have indicated they want anywhere from a flat mill levy to a 0.8 mill increase.

But rather than force them to spend more, State Rep. Kenny Wilk would like to let the endowment associations at the six state universities manage the cash that flows from the state to the colleges.

I pay them, too,” school board member John Mitchell said. “But the way state finance for public education works, there’s just really very little that our district can do other than to look at that option seriously.”

An election may be on the horizon this spring for Lawrence voters. Lawrence school board members on Monday night explored asking for a property tax increase that would generate an estimated $680,000 that could fund raises for teachers and help to provide mental health services.
