City employees and visitors who are in Lawrence's city hall will get a refresher course on what to do if there's a twister spotted nearby -- they'll take part in the annual statewide tornado drill.

When the emergency alert system is activated on Tuesday, a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration radio in the city's risk management office will serve as the alert for employees and city hall visitors to move to the ground level floor to take shelter.

The public address system in city hall will announce the start of the drill. The time has not been made public.

"The drill is a good reminder to both employees and employers that severe weather can occur during the work day and this once a year drill refreshes our safety plan in everyone's mind," said Jennifer Harvey, the city's risk manager.

The annual statewide tornado drill is part of Severe Weather Awareness Week, which is held just before the traditional peak tornado months of April, May and June.

Offices in the city hall will retain minimal staff to answer phones and assist citizens during the drill.
