For years, residents talked about the "Tonganoxie split."
Big storms never seemed to hit the town. They always went north toward Leavenworth or south toward Lawrence.

Three weeks after a tornado tore through Tonganoxie and Leavenworth County, residents and officials are still rebuilding and looking ahead to more relaxing summer activities. The Red Cross and many of the volunteer workers have left the city after cleaning trees and debris, but contractors have been busy repairing some of the 112 buildings damaged in the storm.

Cleanup continued into Friday night as the town recovers from Thursday storms. The tornado that roared through Thursday night spawned multiple smaller funnels around a core funnel with winds of 100 to 115 miles per hour as it moved across the width of Leavenworth County.

A 4-year-old girl died after a storm-weakened porch roof collapsed on her Friday morning. Police and emergency personnel declined to release the girl's name pending notification of relatives.
