Two Kansas University students -- one with an affinity for rock, the other a fan of country and '80s music -- are among the latest targets of lawsuits filed by the Recording Industry Association of America. The students, who are identified only as "Doe 1" and "Doe 2" and by their computer IP addresses, are among the 477 new defendants in the RIAA's effort to crack down on downloaders of illegal music.

Lightning strikes KU student

The awesome power of a lightning strike shredded her clothing and hurled her to the ground, but a Kansas University senior miraculously escaped serious injury Thursday afternoon when she was struck while walking near Potter Lake.
Traci Pillard, a 21-year-old communications studies student from Salina, apparently was hit by a lightning bolt that also hit a large sycamore tree. She never lost consciousness.

Kansas University student Shannon Martin called O'dette and Marciel Porras her Costa Rica "mama" and "papa."
"She loved them dearly," said Jeanette Stauffer, mother of Martin, who was stabbed to death May 13, 2001, during a research trip to Golfito, Costa Rica. She was staying with the Porrases, who had been her host family during a KU Study Abroad program the previous spring.

The gap is widening between Kansas University's highest- and lowest-paid employees. In the past five years, the average administrator's salary has increased 21 percent, while classified employees - including secretaries, janitors and maintenance workers - saw an average increase of 12 percent.

Reports Sunday that a Kansas University student had been murdered in Costa Rica sent a shock wave across campus.
Details, however, were lacking late Sunday about how Shannon Martin, a 23-year-old Topeka senior, was killed in the small, coastal town of Golfito.
