Carmin D. Ross
Police found Carmin Ross dead in November 2003 inside her home at 1860 E. 1150 Road. An attorney trained as a mediation expert, Ross previously worked as Manhattan city prosecutor and director of employee relations for Kansas State University. She had moved to Lawrence after divorcing Murray and was trying to establish Lawrence as the primary residence for the couple's 4-year-old daughter. She also had developed an interest in alternative healing.

Thomas E. Murray
Murray is a Kansas State University English professor and an expert in linguistics. Students describe him as an excellent teacher. He told detectives he liked his life to be "dull and boring." Prosecutors allege he stabbed and beat his ex-wife, Carmin D. Ross, to death in a crime of passion shortly after she told him her new love interest was moving from California to Lawrence. Murray told the Journal-World shortly after Ross' death that the killing was "the saddest moment in my life."
